Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 1885 was a lakeside city on the western shore of Lake Michigan, where the Sheboygan River meets the water and ships carried lumber, grain, and manufactured goods. German immigrants and their families made up a large part of the population, and their breweries, churches, and social clubs shaped daily life along the streets shown here. Furniture and chair factories were becoming important employers, tying the city's fortunes to the timber cut in the forests of northern Wisconsin. Residents would have known Sheboygan as a busy river port and a growing manufacturing town, with the harbor and its docks at the center of its commerce.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, drawn in 1885. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
