Steam drifting over a rough canyon floor makes this view of Devil's Canyon stand apart from the granite cliffs and waterfalls that dominate most of this board. The picture dates to about 1868 and was printed as an albumen print, a process that gave large-format views of this period their warm brown tones and fine detail. The geysers of Northern California drew tourists and photographers eager to document such unusual features. Although the gallery groups it with Yosemite, the image records a different kind of natural wonder in the state's landscape.
