Few views in Yosemite match the title's sense of height. The valley's granite walls drop sheer from the rim to the floor, and the vantage described here looks straight down that gulf. Yosemite Valley was carved by glaciers and rivers over long spans of time, and in 1864 Abraham Lincoln signed the grant that set the valley aside for public use, the first such protection of scenery in the country. Photographers such as Carleton Watkins helped make these cliffs famous, and their large prints shaped how Americans pictured the West.
