Unlike the Yosemite valley views that usually fill this board, this print looks down into a geyser canyon from the grounds of a hotel. The Geysers, north of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, drew San Francisco travelers by stagecoach in the 1860s, who came to bathe in mineral springs and watch steam rise from the ground. Made as an albumen print from a large-format negative, the picture shows how photographers of the period used big plates to capture fine detail in rock, vegetation and vapor.
