Three Confederate prisoners, taken in the fighting around Gettysburg, pose for the camera in this 1863 stereograph, a pair of glass plates meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth. In the days after the battle ended on July 3, thousands of Southern soldiers were gathered and held in temporary enclosures in and around town. Photographers working there recorded scenes like this for a public eager for images of the war. The plates were long credited to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is now considered uncertain.
