The record links this picture to Gettysburg and to a Confederate general but does not name the officer, so the sitter's identity remains open. The battle, fought July 1–3, 1863, in south-central Pennsylvania, was the largest of the Civil War and ended Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North. Images of Confederate officers were widely reproduced in the decades after the war, as veterans and publishers shaped how the battle was remembered. The uniform, setting and any inscription are the best clues to the picture's date and origin.
