Filed under the Confederate heading, this view of Gettysburg offers the Southern side of a battle that many pictures show mainly from the Union lines. The fighting took place over three days, July 1 to 3, 1863, in and around the small Pennsylvania town, and it ended Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North. Confederate troops of the Army of Northern Virginia made their most famous assault on the third day, against Union positions on Cemetery Ridge, an attack known as Pickett's Charge. Images like this one help show how the battle was remembered by those who fought on the losing side.
