The Dalles of the St. Louis River are a rock-walled stretch of rapids in northeastern Minnesota, where the river drops sharply on its way to Lake Superior. These stereographs present the place as a destination for hunters and campers. T.W. Ingersoll, a St. Paul photographer, made the views around 1890, when stereo cards were a popular form of parlor entertainment and armchair travel. The paired images create depth, so a viewer at home could feel close to the gorge and the camp life along its banks. This St. Louis River is in Minnesota, not the Missouri city that the gallery heading suggests.
