The Veiled Prophet was a secret masked society in St. Louis, and this color poster announces its appearance on Tuesday, October 2, 1883, the night its anonymous leader would make a public procession through the city. The Veiled Prophet parades were the centerpiece of the city's fall social calendar, drawing crowds to the streets and ending in a ball for the society's elite. Posters like this one were used to advertise the spectacle and to build anticipation among residents and visitors alike. The identity of the Prophet was kept secret for decades, which added to the mystique the posters were designed to sell.
