Few hotels in Berlin were as well known to foreign visitors as the Adlon, which stood on Unter den Linden near the Brandenburg Gate and the Pariser Platz. This negative pairs the hotel's exterior with the U.S. Embassy, placing American diplomacy within sight of the city's grandest boulevard. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures in the early twentieth century, made it, but the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact date remains uncertain. The Adlon, which opened in 1907, drew diplomats, journalists and travelers until wartime damage brought an end to its prominence.
