This drawing, titled as showing Cemetery Hill before Pickett's charge, is tied to a specific soldier, Greenleaf T. Stevens of the 5th Battery, 1st Maine Light Artillery. Its record dates it to July 3, 1863, the afternoon Confederate troops advanced across the open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, with Cemetery Hill just to the north. Drawn in pencil and heightened with Chinese white on green paper, the sheet shows the quick, working technique of a sketch made for reference or record rather than a finished painting. Views like this give a sense of the ground and the artillery positions as they looked just before the fighting reached its peak.
