A giant figure looms over the dead in this color lithograph, so the title "La Pace Tedesca," or "The German Peace," reads as a grim warning about what defeat under German terms would mean. Printed in 1917 at roughly 275 by 198 centimeters, it belongs to the wave of Italian wartime propaganda that aimed to keep citizens committed during years of heavy losses on the Isonzo front. The copy passed through the Rehse Archive for Contemporary History and Journalism, a German collection, which shows how such posters circulated and were preserved well beyond the countries that produced them.
