The caption's line, "but Daddy, mother didn't do anything wrong," frames the scene as a child's bewildered question in the aftermath of a Zeppelin raid. German airships began bombing Britain in January 1915, and their attacks, aimed at military and industrial sites, often killed and injured civilians in towns and cities. Pictures like this one turned those raids into a domestic moment that viewers could understand and feel, which made the war's dangers personal for people far from the front. The child's innocence does much of the work here, pointing to the civilian toll more directly than any depiction of the bombing itself could.
