This 1915 poster takes its title, "The Vow of Vengeance," from the British response to the German airship raids that began over eastern England in January 1915, when Zeppelins bombed coastal towns and killed civilians for the first time on British soil. Posters of this kind were part of wartime propaganda, using the raids to turn grief and anger into support for the war effort and for recruiting. Wartime posters like this one often pictured the airships as threats to women and children, which helped cast the German enemy as a danger to home life rather than only to soldiers at the front.
