Its title, "His Liberty Bond paid for in full," turns a soldier's death into a debt settled by a bond purchase, and the caption beneath it presses the point. W. A. Rogers, a cartoonist long associated with the New York Herald, made this color lithograph in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War and the first Liberty Bond drives began. The text argues that money raised at home would sustain the men who must take a fallen comrade's place in the trenches. It was published through the Herald's patriotic cooperation, part of a wider effort to link civilian bond buying to the fighting overseas.
