Uncle Sam appears here as a figure of national credit, with the claim that he is "worth $225,000,000,000," a sum meant to stand behind every Liberty bond sold during the First World War. The poster was issued in 1917, after the United States entered the war in April of that year, when the federal government needed to borrow heavily to finance its military and allied effort. Liberty Bonds were marketed to ordinary Americans through campaigns like this one, and the slogan "Buy a Liberty bond to-day" makes the appeal direct. Its color lithography and bold lettering were typical of the many government and private posters that filled streets, shop windows and public buildings during the war.
