Its title, "There is a Liberty Bond in this house," turns the war effort inward, asking families to see a bond as a stake they own in the country's cause. A commercial art class at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore produced the color lithograph in 1918, and the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation sponsored it, tying the bond drive to the push to build merchant ships. The Treasury sold Liberty Bonds from 1917 to 1919 to help pay for the war, and posters like this one were among the main tools for reaching ordinary households.
