Skeletons raising their glasses under the title "A toast to Kultur" set this 1916 color lithograph apart from the many wartime posters that showed soldiers or battlefields. German writers used the word *Kultur* in 1914 to describe their country's cultural and moral mission, and critics abroad turned it into an accusation, suggesting that a culture devoted to war had made death its true beneficiary. Skeletons and personified Death were common in the war's imagery, where they stood for the mounting toll of the fighting. The record notes a former owner, the Rehse Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a German collection of contemporary history.
