Few posters of the war put the gas attack so directly in the viewer's face as this 1916 color lithograph, whose title, "Gassed!," is paired with the bitter line "another victory for Kultur." The poster was made by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and Herbert MacNair, Glasgow designers known for their distinctive decorative style. Germany first used chlorine gas at Ypres in April 1915, and the horror of gas casualties became a common theme in Allied propaganda. Here, the word "Kultur" is used sarcastically, presenting German culture as something that had turned to brutality.
