Flagg's poster asks Americans to turn their backyards into a front line, with the caption "Every garden a munition plant" placing the vegetable patch alongside the factory as a way to support the war effort. It was issued in 1918 under the sponsorship of the United States Food Administration and the National War Garden Commission, which was led by Charles Lathrop Pack. Food was rationed and shipped to Europe during the war, so home gardens were promoted as a way to free up supplies for troops and allies. The small print at the bottom, inviting readers to write for free guides on gardening, canning and drying, shows how much the campaign relied on ordinary households.
