Its slogans do much of the work here. "First in the fight" and "Always faithful" are long-standing Marine Corps phrases, and the second echoes the corps' motto, *Semper Fidelis*. Dated 1922, the poster came after the armistice ending World War I, when the service was reducing the wartime ranks it had swelled to meet the fighting. James Montgomery Flagg, best known for his Uncle Sam "I Want You" poster of 1917, produced many recruiting images, and this one's bold color and direct appeal to young men show how the services courted volunteers in the years between the wars.
