A robed figure of Liberty, wearing her familiar cap, scatters seeds across the ground beneath a rainbow in this 1917 color lithograph by Frank V. DuMond. The poster was issued by the National War Garden Commission, which encouraged Americans to plant vegetable gardens so that more commercial food could be sent overseas to troops and allied nations during the First World War. Its printed offer of free books suggests the commission also aimed to teach home gardening to people with little experience. Posters like this one were a common way wartime campaigns reached households across the country.
