Its German title, *Schützt die Heimat!* ("Protect the Homeland!"), is paired on the item with a second title, *Tretet ein in den Grenzschutz Ost!* ("Join the Eastern Border Guard!"), which names the recruiting drive it served. The Grenzschutz Ost was raised in 1919 to defend Germany's eastern frontier after the First World War, when the country was losing territory and facing armed conflict along its new borders. Posters like this one, with their appeal to protect small communities, were meant to draw volunteers in a period of defeat, political upheaval and fear of invasion. The lithograph is in color and measures 89 by 69 centimeters.
