Few places were as personal to Hermann Göring as Carinhall, the country estate he built in the Schorfheide forest near Templin, north of Berlin, and named for his first wife, Carin, who had died in 1931. This photograph records the Richtfest, the traditional topping-out ceremony held when a building's roof frame is complete, here marking the new house's progress in December 1936. The album it comes from documents Göring's activities that autumn, so the picture shows the estate as its owner wanted it seen, both as a hunting retreat and as a display of his rank.
