Few posters from this period name a production as plainly as this one does: the lettering announces *Fatinitza*, the comic operetta by Franz von Suppé that premiered in Vienna in 1876 and reached American stages within a few years. The sheet was lithographed in black and white at H.A. Thomas's studio on Broadway in New York, with the design signed by Vic Arnold and the copyright registered to Thomas in 1879. Theater posters of the late 1870s were often built to be read quickly from the street, so the large display type and dense illustration were meant to sell a show to passersby. The poster also records how touring Viennese operetta was marketed to American audiences during its early popularity.
