The poster's claim that this production of *Man's Enemy* was "now in its 4th year in England" sets it apart from the many melodrama bills of the period, and its promise of "tons of scenery" points to a show built on spectacle. Late-nineteenth-century touring melodramas relied on elaborate stage pictures, sensational incidents, and bold advertising to draw audiences, and posters like this one were a company's main way of announcing itself before it reached a town. This sheet is a black-and-white lithograph printed in 1899 by the Russell-Morgan Print Company of Cincinnati and New York, a firm that produced many theatrical posters. Its credit lines name Charles A. Longdon and Eric Hudson.
