A large black-and-white lithograph of a single woman's head, this sheet measures about 154 by 104 centimeters, a size that suggests it was meant to be seen from across a room. It was printed in New York by Ferd. Mayer & Sons, a firm known for mammoth lithographic prints, and it is signed by the artist Peter Kramer (1823-1907). The title "Fancy female head" was assigned by the cataloguer, not printed on the sheet, and it points to the decorative character-study portraits that were popular in the 1870s. The print is held in the Library of Congress's performing arts poster collection, where it is valued for showing how the era's commercial lithography blended portraiture with ornament.
