The Thomas Viaduct carries the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad across the Patapsco River valley near Elkridge, Maryland, and this view looks up at the curve of its stone arches from inside the bend. Completed in 1835, it was the first multiple-arch stone railroad bridge built in the United States and the first to use a curve, a choice that required the masonry to be laid to follow the track's bend. The B&O, chartered in 1827, was then pushing westward from Baltimore, and the viaduct was one of the engineering works that proved railroads could cross rough terrain. Its eight spans still stand today, carrying trains as they did nearly two centuries ago.
