Few posters tie the wartime scrap effort so directly to a single state: this one, produced in 1940 and tagged to Washington State scrap drives, asks residents to gather metal and turn it into materials for the war effort. Its blunt slogan, which calls for salvaging scrap to strike back at Japan, reflects how Americans viewed the conflict in Asia before the United States entered the war in December 1941. Made under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, the poster is a useful record of how federal arts programs were recruited to support national defense messaging during those years.
