Built to carry trains, wagons, and pedestrians over the Mississippi at St. Louis, the Eads Bridge was nearing completion when this chromolithograph was issued around 1874 by the local firm Compton & Co. The print shows the steel arches as a civic triumph in bright color. James B. Eads, the engineer who designed the bridge, sank its piers using pneumatic caissons, a daring method at the time. Chromolithography built up the print's vivid colors by layering multiple stone or plate impressions, one ink at a time.
