Its subject is Montana's buttes, the flat-topped rock formations that rise abruptly from the plains, and the record links the work to the state's tourist trade of the 1930s. The title, *See America!*, echoes the promotional slogans that urged Americans to explore their own country, a message that gained force as cars and improved highways made long trips more practical. Gouache, an opaque water-based paint, produced the bold, flat color favored in travel posters and promotional art of the period. The record does not say who made the painting or for what purpose.
