Kansas City in 1885 was a rough, fast-growing river town that had only recently begun to look like a city rather than a steamboat landing on the Missouri. The city sat at a busy junction where the river met the railroads, and in the 1880s its population was climbing quickly as rail lines brought in grain, livestock and new residents. Views from this period capture the mix of wooden storefronts, brick commercial blocks and unpaved streets that marked the transition. Look closely at the street and rooflines to see how quickly the town was reshaping itself.
