Shown in half-length, or *en buste*, this color crayon lithograph portrays Marcelle Lender, a Parisian stage dancer whose fame in the 1890s made her a favored subject for printmakers. The sheet is a second state, signed in pencil with the artist's monogram, and its Delteil catalog number points to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who made several portraits of her in these years. Worth noticing are the flat fields of color and the firm contour line, qualities Toulouse-Lautrec absorbed from Japanese woodblock prints that circulated widely in Paris.
