Bertha Lum's color woodcut "Kites" shows children at play in Japan, a subject she returned to often in her work. Lum (1869–1954) was an American printmaker who lived in Peking (now Beijing) and worked in the Japanese woodblock tradition, having her designs carved and printed by Chinese and Japanese craftsmen. Her prints of everyday scenes, such as the kite flying here, were admired for their soft color and careful outlines. This example is dated 1913 and is signed in pencil by the artist, marked No. 22 in her numbering.
