*Kiyomizu Komachi* shows the 9th-century poet Ono no Komachi at Kiyomizu Temple, the Kyoto hillside temple known for its wooden stage projecting over the valley. Komachi was celebrated in Japan for both her poetry and her beauty, and by the early nineteenth century she had become a familiar figure in Noh drama and popular prints. Printed between about 1804 and 1818, the sheet belongs to the late flowering of multicolor woodblock prints, when designers favored graceful female figures, fine textiles, and allusions to classical poetry.
