Glass negatives like this one, made in 1911, capture the Pittsburgh National League club at practice, a routine that was seldom photographed in detail. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, which holds work from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers in the early 1900s. Pittsburgh's team had been strong in the years before, and by 1911 the club was playing in Forbes Field, which had opened in 1909. Pictures like this one show the everyday work behind a season's games.
