A pencil drawing dated January 1864 shows a makeshift stage built inside an old warehouse at Culpeper Court House, Virginia, where soldiers of the Fourteenth Brooklyn regiment had gathered during the winter encampment. The regiment came from Brooklyn, and its men spent that season near Culpeper while the Army of the Potomac rested and regrouped after the fighting of 1863. Soldier-run theatricals like this one gave men a way to pass the long idle months between campaigns. The sketch is signed only "EF," so the artist is unidentified, but its careful rendering of the stage and seating offers a glimpse of camp life away from the battlefield.
