This black-and-white print is catalogued as no. 16 in the *Portrait of America* series, a set of mid-century photographs of American landmarks, and its date is estimated at around 1944. The statue itself, a gift from France, was dedicated on Liberty Island in New York Harbor on October 28, 1886. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed its copper skin, and Gustave Eiffel engineered the iron framework inside. By the 1940s the figure had become a widely recognized emblem of freedom, especially as the country fought in World War II and welcomed arrivals by sea.
