Dock Square, at the corner of Elm Street, is the setting for this colored view of the J. W. Smith & Co. clothing house, which billed itself as merchant tailors and clothiers. The square was one of Boston's oldest marketplaces, close to Faneuil Hall and the waterfront, so its shops served a steady stream of townspeople, shoppers and sailors. Views of storefronts like this one were a common way for merchants to advertise their names and wares, and the color work draws attention to the signs and goods meant to catch a passerby's eye. The print offers a useful glimpse of commercial life in the city's old center.
