Set on King Street, now State Street, the scene shows the shooting that killed five colonists on March 5, 1770, in what became known as the Boston Massacre. Paul Revere's engraving, with its title announcing the "Bloody Massacre," was published within weeks and circulated widely in the colonies. It presented the event as a deliberate slaughter of unarmed townspeople by British troops, and it helped turn public opinion against the crown's military presence in Boston. Many surviving copies were later hand-colored, so the color prints in circulation vary in tone and detail.
