Two well-known horses, Harry Bassett and Longfellow, are the subjects of this print, which commemorates their races at Long Branch, New Jersey, on July 2, 1872, and at Saratoga, New York, on July 16. The New York firm Currier & Ives produced many colorful chromolithographs of sporting scenes in the 1870s, when horse racing and trotting drew large crowds to summer tracks. Saratoga was a fashionable resort as well as a racing center, so its meetings attracted wealthy visitors and a broad public. The print offers a vivid record of a rivalry that held interest well beyond the racecourse.
