Saratoga Springs, the mineral-spring resort in upstate New York, was a fashionable summer destination in the 1830s, and this lithograph takes that setting as the stage for a social slight. Its title, "The cut direct," refers to the deliberate public snub of one person by another, and the cartoon names Martin Van Buren and Catherine Jones Clinton as its figures. The print was issued in 1839, when Van Buren was president and political opponents routinely used satire to mock public men and their manners. It was lithographed by H. R. Robinson of New York and signed with the monogram "HD," which is generally read as Henry Dacre.
