The Loomis breaker at Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, served the Wyoming Valley's anthracite fields, where the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad moved much of the coal out of the region. Breakers were tall wooden structures that crushed mined coal and screened it into graded sizes, removing slate and rock along the way, and young boys often did the picking in heavy dust and noise. The photograph, dated to about August 1915, comes from an album kept by the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, a reminder that the military also paid attention to the coal and rail networks that fueled the period.
