Few landmarks were paired with the airplane as directly as Yosemite Falls in this United Air Lines poster, which places a plane above the valley and its waterfall. Around 1945, airlines were working to persuade Americans that flying could be as routine as the train or the family car, and national parks made ideal subjects because they suggested leisure and grand scale. Yosemite Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in North America, gave the designer a dramatic vertical landmark to anchor the composition. The halftone color printing typical of postwar posters makes the sheet a useful record of how the air age was sold to travelers.
