Calvin Coolidge, serving as vice president in 1922, appears in this glass negative with Wesley Barry, a child actor who had become a popular screen name in the early 1920s. Pairing a national political figure with a young film performer reflects how eagerly newspapers and studios sought public attention in that era. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio, produced a large body of portraits like this one, and its negatives were made on glass, a format common before flexible film became standard. The streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
