Few recruiting posters of 1915 speak as directly to the viewer as this one, which asks in its title, "Why don't I go?" and answers with the 148th Battalion's need. The record credits the design to Holland and names the unit's headquarters at 197 Peel Street, with Lieutenant Colonel A. A. Magee in command. The 148th was one of the overseas battalions raised in Canada early in the war, when the Canadian Expeditionary Force depended entirely on volunteers. Its link to the McGill University Contingent of the Canadian Officers Training Corps reflects how universities and local militia helped build these units. The color lithograph shows the methods of wartime persuasion used to fill the ranks before conscription was introduced in 1917.
