This poster stands apart from other recruiting appeals for its direct address to sportsmen, urging young men to "play the greater game" by joining the football battalion. The Footballers' Battalion, raised in London in late 1914 as part of Britain's volunteer Kitchener army, drew on the enthusiasm of the football world, and the taunt that the Germans thought Britain "not in earnest" answers doubts that the volunteers would ever come forward. This color lithograph, designed and printed by Johnson, shows how recruiters tied patriotism to familiar sporting pride.
