This poster speaks directly to a civilian man who is proud of his friends in the Army but must ask himself what those friends will think of him. Printed as a color lithograph and credited on its face to Johnson as both designer and printer, it belongs to the British recruiting campaigns of the First World War, which often relied on social pressure as much as patriotic appeal. Posters like this one asked men to measure their choices against their comrades' expectations, and they circulated widely as Britain moved from voluntary enlistment toward conscription in 1916.
