Buster Brown, the mischievous boy in the bowl-cut and sailor suit, was created by cartoonist R.F. Outcault, who first drew him in the New York Herald's comic pages in 1902. This 1907 color lithograph advertises a stage production built around the character, printed by the U.S. Lithograph Co. and Russell-Morgan Print of Cincinnati and New York. Posters like this one were a major way touring shows drew audiences in the early 1900s, and the character's popularity also led to a long run of licensed merchandise, most famously shoe advertising.
