What sets this picture apart is that it reproduces a presentation plaque rather than the ship alone. The plaque gathers photographs of the cruiser, her gig and barge crews, and sixteen individual sailors. The U.S.S. *San Francisco* was a protected cruiser built at the Union Iron Works in San Francisco and commissioned in 1890, and she served during the Spanish-American War. Gig and barge crews rowed the ship's boats for transport and ceremony, so their portraits show a working part of shipboard life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the copy, was a commercial photographer known for its views of American cities, landmarks and scenes from the period.
